What We Believe About Baptism:

At Bethany Lutheran Church, we hold to the historic, biblical teaching of baptism as taught in the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Baptism isn’t just a symbol—it’s one of the powerful ways God brings His grace into our lives.

Baptism Is God's Gift to Us

We believe that baptism is something God does for us, not something we do for Him. Through simple water and God’s Word, He gives us the gifts of forgiveness, new life, and salvation (Titus 3:5; Acts 2:38). It’s one of the ways God wraps us in His promises.

Baptism Is for All Ages

We baptize infants, children, and adults—because everyone needs God’s grace, and God’s promises are for everyone. In Scripture, we see that:

  • We’re all born in need of forgiveness (Psalm 51:5).
  • Even little ones can have faith (Luke 18:15–17).
  • Jesus tells us to make disciples of "all nations"—which includes children (Matthew 28:19).
  • Baptism and Faith Go Together
  • Baptism works with faith. It’s not magic—it’s a gift that faith receives. For adults, baptism usually comes after faith is formed. For children, baptism can be the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith—nurtured in the home and in the church community.

Baptism Happens Once

We believe in one baptism for a lifetime (Ephesians 4:5). Even if someone walks away from the faith for a time, God’s promises in baptism remain. What we need then is not to be baptized again, but to return in repentance and trust God’s grace anew.

Rooted in Scripture

Here are just a few places where the Bible speaks about the power and purpose of baptism:

  • Matthew 28:19-20 – Jesus commands us to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Acts 2:38 – Peter says, “Be baptized… for the forgiveness of your sins.”
  • Romans 6:3-4 – Through baptism we are united with Jesus in His death and resurrection.
  • 1 Peter 3:21 – “Baptism now saves you…”
